GMS SCHOOL COUNSELOR CORNER
Supporting Each Other Through Loss
With our school community experiencing the loss of Ms. Karley, we wanted to address what grief might look like and what to do to help. Grief can show up in unexpected ways at this age: tears, anger, trouble focusing, acting "too fine," or not wanting to talk about it at all. All of these are normal.
What you might see at home: Changes in sleep or appetite, clinginess, irritability, or a student who seems unusually quiet. These reactions can surface right away or a few days later, and they may come and go for a while.
Try this at home: You don't need the right words — just availability. Try "I heard about your teacher — I'm here if you want to talk, or if you just want company." Let your student lead on how much they share.
Where to turn: School counselors are available for any student who wants to talk, whether about this loss or anything else on their mind — they can stop by, or a parent can reach out to set that up.
