Helping Our GMS Students Become Independent Learners

Parents, we encourage you to regularly check ProgressBook with your student to review grades, missing assignments, and overall progress. ProgressBook is a great tool for helping students understand where they are academically and take ownership of their learning.

As middle school students grow, one of our goals is to help them move from being dependent on adults to becoming more independent and responsible learners. This means students should begin learning to check their own grades, identify missing work, communicate with teachers when they need help, and make a plan to stay on track.

Your role is still very important! We encourage you to check in, ask questions, and help your student develop these habits, while gradually allowing your student to take more responsibility for monitoring their own progress.

Together, we can help our GMS Smithies build the responsibility, organization, and independence they need to be successful in middle school and beyond!

SMITHIE INVITE KIDS FUN RUN

Come join the Smithville Cross Country teams for the Smithie Invite Kids Fun Run!  This free fun run for kids up through 6th grade will be approximately one mile and will take place at the start of the Smithie Invite on Tuesday, September 8th at 4pm at Wayne College.  High School and middle school races will follow the Kids Fun Run.  No registration required.  Questions?  Contact Coach Carr at gren_jcarr@tccsa.net.

Organizing for Success

A cluttered binder or missing planner can quietly chip away at grades. A quick weekly check of folders, binders, or Progress Book can catch small problems before they become big ones. If you have any questions or have trouble getting into Progress Book please reach out. 

Try this at home: Set a 10-minute “backpack and binder” check-in on the same day each week.
